At Align & Smile, we offer intravenous sedation, also known as IV sedation, which involves injecting sedative medication into the arm or the back of the hand. Sedation is a means of facilitating relaxation, and it can be incredibly beneficial for patients who are anxious about undergoing a dental procedure. The dose of medication used will depend on the type and duration of treatment.

Sedation dentistry involves the use of sedatives, which are designed to help patients to feel more relaxed both before and during dental treatment. Sedation is a practice used widely in medicine and dentistry and it enables anxious patients to feel calm and at ease.
Sedation offers benefits for both patients and dentists. With sedation, our dentists are able to get on with the procedure without worrying about the patient being uncomfortable, and they can work for longer periods of time, which reduces total treatment duration and improves continuity. For patients, treatment is less daunting and they feel completely relaxed during the procedure. We often recommend sedation for patients with severe anxiety and dental phobia, as well as those who require complex procedures.

What happens when you are sedated?

If you’re having treatment under sedation, our dentist will explain exactly what will happen before you are given your IV injection. If you have any questions at all, don’t hesitate to ask the dentist, as we will be able to provide answers and eliminate any last-minute worries. When you’re ready, the dentist will administer the injection, and you will start to feel the effects. Sedation is not the same as general anaesthetic, and you will be conscious throughout the procedure. You will just feel drowsy and the sedative will induce a dream-like state. You won’t feel any pain, and you probably won’t recall much about the procedure afterwards.
After sedation, it can take up to 24 hours for the effects to wear off completely. When you’ve had your procedure, the dentist will monitor you closely, and when you’re ready, you can make your way home. We recommend asking a friend, partner or family member to accompany you home, as you might feel a little drowsy for a while and you won’t be able to drive. We also advise against exercising and drinking alcohol for 24 hours after sedation.

Sedation dentistry involves undertaking a dental procedure when the patient is sedated using sedative medication. As a patient, you won’t feel any pain, and you should feel totally relaxed throughout.

If you suffer from dental phobia or anxiety or you need a lengthy, complex dental procedure, you may benefit from sedation dentistry. Our dentists are on hand to talk through the pros and cons and make tailored recommendations based on your needs and preferences.

Our sedation fee is £600.
