What is a dental bridge?

A dental bridge is a type of restoration, which is used to fill gaps in the smile. Bridges are bespoke, and they are fabricated by our highly-skilled technicians. There are various different types of bridge available, including:

  • A traditional fixed bridge: this is the most common type of dental bridge. It is made of a false tooth, which is supported by a crown on either side. Traditional bridges are sturdy and stable, and they are designed to blend in with the natural teeth for a beautiful aesthetic.
  • Cantilever bridge: a cantilever bridge may be recommended when there are only healthy teeth on one side of the gap. In this case, the bridge is fitted to the one adjacent tooth. These bridges are best suited to the front teeth.
  • Maryland bridge: a Maryland bridge comprises a false tooth, which is fixed to the back of the neighbouring tooth.

What are bridges made of?

Bridges can be made from several different materials, including precious metals, ceramics and porcelain. If the tooth is at the front of the mouth, bridges made from ceramic combined with metal are usually recommended for a more aesthetically-pleasing result.

How is a bridge fitted?

Before you have your bridge fitted, our highly-skilled dentists will create an impression of your mouth, which will serve as a template. Your bridge will then be fabricated by our experienced technicians and we will organise an appointment to fit your new bridge, usually 2 weeks later. Your dentist will clean your mouth and then secure the bridge, fixing it into positon. You can then see your new smile for the first time.

How much does a dental bridge cost?

The cost of a bridge will vary according to the materials used and the type of bridge. Some patients may think bridges are expensive, but they do represent an investment, as they last up to 15 years. They are also much cheaper than dental implants, and the treatment process is also much shorter and less invasive.
