What causes bad breath?

There are several reasons why some people are more prone to bad breath than others. The most common cause is poor oral hygiene. If you’re not up to speed with twice-daily brushing and flossing, this can put you at risk of bad breath. Bacteria collect in your mouth, and when they feed, they release gases, which have an unpleasant odour. It is particularly common for bacteria to gather at the back of the tongue. Other causes include:

  • Smoking
  • Eating certain foods with strong flavours, such as onions, garlic, spicy food and coffee
  • Drinking alcohol
  • Dry mouth
  • Gum disease

In some cases, bad breath can also be a symptom of an underlying health condition, which affects another part of the body, for example, the liver, kidneys or the throat.

How we can help

If you suffer from bad breath, we are here to help. Our dentists and dental hygienists have many years of experience in treating and managing halitosis, and we have a range of techniques and treatments that can be employed to boost oral health and increase your confidence. The most important step when treating bad breath is to determine a cause. In most cases, improving oral hygiene will reduce the severity and frequency of bouts of bad breath. We can offer tailored oral hygiene tips to help you brush better and floss more effectively, and we can also provide intensive cleaning treatments.

If you have bad breath as a result of gum disease, we will target the cause as a priority. Mild gum disease, also known as gingivitis, can often be treated using hygiene therapies. It’s crucial to treat gingivitis early, as it can develop into a more advanced condition, known as periodontal disease, if left untreated. If you have symptoms of advanced gum disease, we recommend a combination of cleaning treatments and measures that will help to prevent the situation from getting worse, including better oral hygiene at home. We can also provide advice and support for those who wish to try and quit smoking.
