Twin Block appliance

The Twin Block appliance is designed to benefit patients who have protruding teeth. It helps to align the teeth and correct the bite by encouraging growth in the lower jaw.

What is a Twin Block appliance?

A Twin Block appliance is a specialist jaw aligning brace, which is made up of two blocks. This treatment option is often recommended for young patients who have an overjet. This occurs when the top teeth protrude over the bottom teeth. With a healthy bite, there should be a slight overlap when the jaw is closed (around 2-4mm). With an overjet, the gap between the upper and lower arches is substantial (up to 10mm).

How does a Twin Block appliance work?

The aim of the Twin Block device is to maximise genetic growth in the lower jaw. The appliance works by restricting growth in the upper jaw, pushing the lower teeth forward and pulling the upper teeth back. The result is a more even smile.

The treatment process

A Twin Block appliance should be worn at all times. Most people are advised to use the appliance for between 6 and 9 months. You can take the appliance out for a very brief rest period, but try and wear it as much as possible. The upper block is usually fitted with an expansion screw, which you should turn in the direction specified by your orthodontist. Our dentist will give you all the information you need, and if you do have any questions, we’re only at the end of the phone.

FAQs

Yes, you can take the Twin Block out to clean your teeth. One you’ve cleaned your teeth, it’s a good idea to clean the appliance too. You can do this with a toothbrush, toothpaste and special cleaning solution, which is available from our dentist.

If you’re playing sport, it’s wise to take the Twin Block out. Make sure you keep it in a safe place, for example, your brace box, while you play and put it back in when you’ve finished.

If you have any problems with your Twin Block, don’t hesitate to get in touch. If you can’t wear the appliance, call us and we’ll arrange an emergency appointment for you.
